Frequently Asked Questions
Can anyone register an Australian Domain
Australian .au domain names are country-specific top-level domains that can significantly enhance your business’s search engine rankings. These domains not only attract substantial organic traffic to your website but also help establish a strong online presence for your brand in the Australian market.
To be eligible for .au domain registration, you must have some form of presence in Australia, such as citizenship or a registered company. The following parties can register for a .au domain:
1. An Australian registered business or organization
2. A sole trader or partnership
3. A foreign business with a license to trade in Australia
4. An Australian registered non-profit organization or political party
5. An Australian registered charity, club, or association
Additionally, it is recommended to obtain an Australian Business Number (ABN) when registering for .au domain names. This adds a level of legality and legitimacy to your business.
What is a gTLD?
gTLD stands for “generic top-level domain,” referring to the extension at the end of a website address, such as .com, .org, or .net. Anyone can purchase and use generic top-level domains, which are not limited to a specific geographical area. The newer gTLDs, also known as nTLDs, include over 1,000 domain extensions recently approved by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) for generic use. Examples of these newer gTLDs are .xyz, .online, and .vip, among others.
Are there domain extensions in languages other than English?
Speakers of nearly three dozen languages, including Arabic, Chinese, and languages based on the Cyrillic alphabet, have their own domains. This is a significant benefit for companies promoting their products in countries where these languages are spoken.
Top tips on choosing the right domain name
Your domain name is your address on the internet. It’s how people find you when they search Google and also what you use as part of your brand and communications.
The extension part of your domain is also important. In Australia it’s a good idea to choose .com.au as your extension as this identifies you immediately as an Australian company or business. There are rules however on who can register a .com.au, the main one being you must have an ABN. Click here for more information on this.
Don’t forget that you can also use your new domain name as your email address. An example would be yourname@yourbusiness.com.au. This always looks more professional than a free email account like hotmail or gmail.
Choosing a name that is short can be helpful when printing your web address and emails on things like business cards. However a longer domain name can help with search engine optimisation. A good tip is register two domain names, one as an acronym and the other as the full name of your business or product. You can interchange the two domains when it best suits you. Both domains will work as one.
If the domain name you want is already taken why not look at some of the newer domain extensions available? .biz or .co are great alternatives.
